How do split systems work?

Split system air conditioners and heat pumps are two-part systems that consist of an outdoor unit and an indoor unit. The outdoor unit contains a compressor, condenser coil, expansion valve (or metering device) and other components. This is where the temperature exchange takes place between your home’s air and the refrigerant gas used to cool or heat it. The indoor unit, which is usually mounted high on the wall and connected to ductwork, contains an evaporator coil and a fan that circulates air over the refrigerant-filled coil. This cooled or heated air is then circulated through your home’s ductwork via blower fan. The two units are connected by refrigerant lines and electrical wiring.
